Jacob Miller- Version (False Rasta)
Cruical solo side of deep roots from Inner Circle (of COPS theme song fame…)’s former frontman (Miller died in a car accident years before that crime was committed to tape). On Rockers so we know its an Augustus Pablo production/jam and the heavy melodica basis of the track could only be his work. Awesome phasor/flanging throughout. No credits on this one but we are going to assume this is a King Tubby mix and dub(maybe with Prince Jammy lurking somewhere close by). The dub is especially spaced and spacious.
Get lost in that echo…

did you add effects to this track? there’s a phase shift going on that i don’t remember hearing before…
weird.

that is most definitely the sound of King Tubby’s – the phasing is actually Tubby tweaking the console’s custom filter (it was a custom built MCI console originally built for Dynamic Studios in the late 60’s, similar to what was in James Brown’s King Studios in the States). the effect was *very* popular with producers who brought tapes to Tubby (it was a mix only studio, no tracking), and the effect was asked for specifically. “False Rasta” was cut around the same time (probably at Randy’s Studio) as all the other Augustus Pablo produced stuff, much of which wound up Tubby-ized on “King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown”
you can see the console in use still in this YouTube video (late70’s/early early 80s), with Jammy at the controls here, and Bunny Lee going crazy behind him…..raahhhh-tid! ….too funny!
