Prince Jazzbo- Left Rite System

Prince Jazzbo- Left Rite System

Icomstan and The Carters- Time is the Master

The A side is Prince Jazzbo production from the 1974 (if the limited information I could find is correct).  This track finds Jazzbo toasting about crime, punishment, systems of power, equal rights etc ..over a pretty energetic dub including some soaring horn interjections…

The B side I was able to find less information about but it sounds to me at least to be a more 80s style Jazzbo production.  Synths and drum machine sounding rhythmics.  Nice sparse dub with punctuating horns and percolating background synths.

On Ujama (Jazzbo’s label)…I have no idea who was playing what or where this was recorded/etc but its a nice enjoyable disc all the same…

Jacob Miller- False Rasta

Jacob Miller- False Rasta

Jacob Miller- Version (False Rasta)

Cruical solo side of deep roots from Inner Circle (of COPS theme song fame…)’s former frontman (Miller died in a car accident years before that crime was committed to tape).  On Rockers so we know its an Augustus Pablo production/jam and the heavy melodica  basis of the track could only be his work.   Awesome phasor/flanging throughout.    No credits on this one but we are going to assume this is a King Tubby mix and dub(maybe with Prince Jammy lurking somewhere close by).  The dub is especially spaced and spacious.

Get lost in that echo…

Floyd Perch- Hot

Floyd Perch- Hot

Floyd Perch- Version

Don’t know too much about this one.  Think it was probably grabbed because of the baseball themed label art….from a little research I have found that Floyd Perch was more popularly known in Dancehall circles under the stage name Nigger Kojak (or just Kojak)…..couldn’t find any mention of this single though.  What I can tell you is that Floyd rides the Real Rock riddim here on the A side talking about how ‘hot’ Jamtown is lately…on the B side the trombone riding the melody line takes over and makes for a pretty enjoyable dub.  Lots of surface noise throughout.

From a little further research the GG’s Hit label was run by producer Alvin Ranglin (so he most likely produced this session).  No idea about the studio, players, or mixing engineer….

Trinity- Dryland Tourist

Trinity- Dryland Tourist

Dryland Tourist Version

and here is my first post….

so i figured i’d dive right in and not worry about making my first record the “be all end all” of my collection or anything….so i just picked up one that was near the top of  my stack of newly aquired used 7″s and put it on hoping it was a decent one and it is.  it also has turned out to be a great example of some unique (or at least common) characteristics surrounding JA pressed records…..that is finding definitive information about it is problematic at best….there is a fair amount of surface noise (although not too bad in this case), there is a slight warp to it (not too noticeable as well), and there is at least one pop/skip (near the beginning of side b(?))….

that ? after side B brings me to my next point….so the only marker on this record is the glued on artist/title on the front there (Trinity- Dryland Tourist) and that side certainly is Trinity.  The B side (or what I’m assuming is the B side) seems to be(is without a doubt…) a dub of that, with some of the original track vocals….doing a bit of snooping i’ve discovered that Trinity’s cut is a version/toasting of Ronnie Davis’ ‘Holding On’ and the only other copies of this record listed I’ve found list that as the A side and Trinity as the B side….is this mislabeled?  is this some other version of this single?  who knows….(maybe you do?)…regardless…solid late 70s grooves here….

if this is in fact Trinity toasting over ‘Holding On’ i believe these are the producing/instrument credits…

Producer : Ronnie Davis & Patrick Sutherland (Pat Scabba is also credited on the label)

Drums : Sly Dunbar

Bass : Robbie Shakespeare

Guitar : Bingy Bunny & Willie Lindo

Organ : Winston Wright

Piano : Gladstone Anderson

Recorded at Channel One

Not sure who did the dub but the Ronnie Davis version was mixed at King Tubby’s…so maybe tubby was at the controls?…sounds solid enough to be him.

explanation

June 19, 2008

so that post didn’t have much of an explanation of what the idea was behind this…

mostly i was looking for a way to share some music that i’ve aquired with some people out there who might be interested….(since i scour the internet for music all the time i’m thinking maybe somebody out there would be interested.)

the concept of this is to rip/post/write about Used reggae 45s i come across….starting with things i have now and maybe eventually being used as kind of a “what have i found lately” type thing….i might throw a 12″ in now and again but mostly this is going to be 7″s (thus the title)….

i’m not interested in posting whole albums (especially not of those that are still in print in one form or another)….there are plenty of other places online where you can do that…

so i think that might be it as an introduction.  say whats up if you are enjoying the tunes or can offer any insight into any of them….

First Post

Still trying to sort everything out….my concept is there just ripping some tunes, taking some pics, making everything all “nice”.  so this is a placeholder.  hopefully things’ll be up and running later tonight or tomorrow.

be very excited…
